Work Place Communication, Employee Dating and Sex on the Job

Most companies and nearly all of American's top Fortune 500 companies do not allow employees to date each other and have policies against it. It can cause a huge problem at work. As often there are love triangles, employee dating and even sex on the job. You can imagine the issues that are involved and the potential lawsuits if something goes wrong.

Even worse once a relationship might be over the workplace communication may suffer because the people are upset at each other and those around them feel uneasy. This is a great way to destroy the productivity of the workplace and can even become dangerous.

There are numerous case studies in human resource manuals that describe such things and there are many lawsuits, which result from employees who have sex on the job while dating someone they work with. After the relationship is over it can even cause sexual harassment lawsuits and cost the company hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Even in small companies it makes sense to have an employee dating policy and let people know that that it is not allowed and obviously sex on the job should not be allowed although you'd think people are smarter than that.

In one case that resulted in a lawsuit the employee manual did not say that the employees could not have sex it only referred to sexual harassment and employee dating. Neither of the two people involved were harassing each other because they were too busy having sex and they did not plan on dating each other after they were finished.

They were both fired but in court they said they were just having a quickie and due to the lack of entry in the employee operations manual they won their case and both employees had to be paid tens of thousands of dollars due to the wrongful termination suit. Needless to say workplace communication skills do not include having sex there are other ways to communicate. Please consider all this in 2006.
